The occurrence of blue stragglers in star clusters and associations is a common phenomenon and presents a challenging problem for traditional stellar evolutionary theories. Much observational and theoretical work has been done on blue stragglers. Various explanations for their nature and origin are reviewed, from which it is suggested that there may exist a variety of formation mechanisms leading to different blue stragglers.
