Focal plane detectors in imaging X-ray telescopes (1-10 keV) based on silicon drift chamber (SDC) devices are reported to offer significant advantages over other types of detectors. The performance of these devices is briefly summarized with respect to both their spatial and energy resolution. The results obtained both from two-dimensional drift devices operating at room temperatures and from a number of drift diodes operating at low temperatures are discussed, and new designs are suggested.
