The mini-magnetospheric plasma propulsion (M2P2) system is a novel concept for deep space propulsion. It is based on the interaction between an expanding high-β plasma from a spacecraft with the fast speed ambient solar wind. As a complement to the existing MHD modeling, we are developing kinetic models for the M2P2 interactions. In our initial attempt, we have developed a hybrid model in which ions are treated kinetically using a particle-in-cell code and electrons are treated as a mass-less fluid. We present here our initial results showing the ballooning of the magnetic field generated by a solenoid on a spacecraft. The ballooning is accompanied by a dense plasma expanding across the magnetic field. .
