We have calculated the temperature distribution of a Martian atmosphere using the high-resolution spectroscopic data of Carleton et al. and the theory of Goody and Gierasch. Models of the Martian atmosphere have been developed and synthetic spectra of the 1.05 micron CO2 spectrum in the Martian atmosphere have been computed. An effective temperature is obtained from the computed synthetic spectra for a nonisothermal and isothermal Martian atmosphere. Van de Hulst's method has also been used to obtain the effective temperatures of the nonisothermal Martian atmosphere. Subsequently, on the basis of results obtained for the effective temperatures from van de Hulst's method and from synthetic spectra for the Martian atmosphere, the method for obtaining the altitude distribution of temperature for the planetary atmosphere from ground-based, high-resolution spectroscopic data has been discussed.
