The paper examines the possibility of determining the size of the polar cap on the basis of data on sporadic-ionization in the E-region. An empirical relationship between the polar-cap radius and the vertical IMF component for Bz values not greater than 1 nTl is found which agrees well with satellite data. This radius value is used to calculate the potential difference across the cap.
