Results are reported for calculations of the parameters and orientation of biaxial and triaxial ellipsoids of revolution which best (in the least-squares sense) approximate the areoidal and physical surfaces of Mars. The initial data include the model of the Martian gravitational field computed to ninth order by Sjogren et al. (1975) and the physical-surface heights determined by Christensen (1975) in an eighth-order spherical harmonic expansion. Numerical results are presented for three solutions: (1) an ellipsoid with its center at the origin and one axis coinciding with the z-axis; (2) an ellipsoid with one axis coinciding with the z-axis; and (3) a freely oriented ellipsoid with nine governing parameters.
