The method of the observed profile inversion is modified by using local B-splines of second degree, polynomials, and cubic fundamental splines. The method is then extended to the case of an arbitrary nonthermal velocity field in the solar atmosphere. The algorithms proposed here are based on the assumption of a complete frequency redistribution in the core of a strong line.
