The problem of the choice of axis for which nutation must be calculated is generalized to any finite interval. Different kinds of observations give the directions in space of one or another straight lines connected with the earth, and unit vectors are drawn parallel to these straight lines from an arbitrary origin. Their positions at different times can be connected through the matrix of rotation about the coordinate axes or, in the case of a deformable earth, through an expression for the motion of the unit vector which makes it possible to find the direction cosines of the axis and the rotation angle from observations at these times. In the general case the axis does not lie in the plane passing through the position of the unit vector at the different times.
