The possibility is considered of determining the density and temperature of compressed deuterium shell targets heated by high-power laser radiation from measurements of the energy dispersion and the ratio of yields of DT and DD neutrons in the case where the DT neutrons are created mainly by fast tritons produced in the reaction D(d, p)T. It is shown how the relation between temperature and density can be obtained by using measurements of the neutron-yield ratio in combination with an energy-dispersion relation derived from the probability of occurrence of the DT reaction before triton thermalization and the fast-triton velocity distribution function. The range of validity of the proposed method is plotted for the case where the energy of the laser system is 1 to 2 kJ. The case of unequal electron and ion temperatures is briefly discussed.
