Some aspects of the determination of vertical electron profiles at heights below the F2 maximum from the frequency dependences of the envelope delays of satellite transionospheric signals emitted at frequencies above the maximum penetration frequency are discussed. The uniqueness of the solution to this problem is demonstrated for a class of monotonic N(h) profiles. Techniques for determining N(h) profiles for various ionospheric models are proposed.
