The calculation of the mass-ratio distribution of spectroscopic binaries from stellar catalogue data is treated by means of a generalized version of the method by Halbwachs (1987). Specific attention is given to the cubic term found in the expression for calculating the mass ratio, and a deconvolution technique is given for studying the expected behavior of P(sin cubed i)d (sin cubed i). The method is shown to give good results when the distribution of the orbital inclinations are assumed to follow Pi(i)di=(4/pi)(sin squared)i(di). Two samples of spectroscopic binaries that are double-lined or single-lined are employed to test the method giving more accurate results than those associated with the assumption of a purely random orientation of the orbital planes for the double-lined subset.
