Mass spectrometer measurements of silicon from silicate rocks indicate a maximum variation in the Si 28 / Si 30 ratio of 1.3%. The light isotope, Si 28 , shows a preference for the basic rocks, while the heavy isotope tends to concentrate in acidic and sedimentary silicates. Precious opal and sinter contain an unusually high percentage of the Si 28 isotope. These variations are believed to be the results of isotopic exchange reactions which have occurred during the geochemical and geological history of the rock.
