Objective prism spectra of Comets Giacobini-Zinner and Halley were obtained with a Schmidt telescope through a special double bandpass filter, which transmits the A2 pi yields X2 sigma(+) (2,0) band of CO(+) and the A bar2 A1 yields X bar2 B1 (0,7,0) band of H2O(+). Using extrafocal images of UBV standard stars taken immediately before or after the cometary exposures through the same filter, the plates were put on absolute scale and the CO(+) and H2O(+) content of the comet tail was derived. The values of the H2O(+) production, if compared with H2O production rates derived from IUE observations, seem high but still reasonable. The H2O/H2O(+) ratio varies by more than a decade. The H2O(+)/CO(+) ratio equals 2 in Giacobini-Zinner and 0.5 and 0.25 in Halley at 1.5 and 1 AU, respectively. The latter values are difficult to explain, since they are inconsistent with stationary ion flow or photochemical models.
