A new method is developed for determination of the chemical energy accommodation coefficient β necessary for the evaluation of the atomic oxygen recombination phenomenon and catalytic properties of silica-based materials under conditions of atmospheric re-entry on Earth. Some preliminary results on the chemical energy accommodation efficiency of two types of silica are obtained using previous measurements of their recombination coefficient and thermal recombination flux at different surface temperatures.
