The principle and some test results of determining the instrumental azimuth by measuring the times of passage of the same stars through the meridian and the prime vertical are presented. The test measurements were made on a reconstructed Zeiss transit instrument equipped with four supporting pillars. The results of the test show that the method is successful. Applied to the meridian circle, this method replaces the traditional method of determining the absolute azimuth by observing circumpolar stars and thereby bypases the difficulties inherent therein and the errors involved in the method of transfer via the azimuth mark.
