Attention is given to a method for the reconstruction of the absolute geopotential by SATEM satellite data. It is based on the presence of an 'isopicnic level' in the troposphere at a height of about 8 km. The method is employed to compute the geopotential heights of 500- and 300-hPa isobaric surfaces over Europe and the Mediterranean. By gridding both the satellite and radiosonde data on isobaric surfaces, the degree of compatibility of the analysis is assessed.
