A photochemical model for the formation of excited hydroxyl molecules and their deactivation in the upper atmosphere is presented. The parameters of the model are taken from laboratory data on the quenching kinetics of excited OH and on its emission probability, as well as from ground-based spectroscopic observations of the intensity of emission from different vibrational levels of OH(v prime) molecules. The model makes it possible to assess seasonal variations of the height of the OH emitting layer on the basis of measurements of vibrational-temperature variations. The probable amplitude of these variations was found to be about three kilometers.
