The vertical profile of CH4 through the ionosphere peak and into the exosphere, determined from the Cassini UVIS TB stellar occultation, shows a significant deviation from a hydrostatic model profile. The slope of the profile changes in the vicinity of the ionosphere peak, about 400 km above the homopause, indicating significant loss rates distributed through the exosphere. The conclusion is that kinetic temperature above about 1200 km cannot be determined from the vertical abundance profile using a hydrostatic model. The properties of other occultations will be examined in the high altitude region to determine possible dependence on latitude/longitude of the impact parameter. The results imply that the structure of the upper atmosphere can be explored through global dynamical model calculations constrained by the occultation data, and kinetic temperature cannot be determined from a simple scale height measurement.
