Coefficients are calculated which make it possible to find the total extinction AV from the selective extinction E(V - X) = AV - AX(X = B,R,I,J,H,K). Consideration is given to a model of cylindrical dust grains which are assumed to have a core-mantle (silicate/dirty ice) structure, their partial alignment being of a Davies-Greenstein type. The effects of grain size are considered along with the effects of the degree and direction of alignment. The use of the equation AV = RVX E(V - X) for X = J,H,K with RVJ = 1.38, RVH = 1.20, and RVK = 1.12 is shown to be the most reliable way to determine A sub V.
