The principles for the detection of gamma ray photons in spark chambers are reviewed leading to the pair-production process and possible determination of original gamma-photon energy and direction of incidence. Methods of gamma ray direction determination are presented. Data on cosmic gamma rays measured by ESRO-TD-1 and NASA SAS-2 satellite spark chambers are reported. Several alternative methods for the extraction of the best possible value for direction from the spark-chamber pictures are studied in connection with the ESRO COS-B which carries a single experiment containing a wire spark chamber with magnetic core memory. The results are presented and the optimum procedure suggested for the orbital data analysis is discussed.
