This is a method of division correction for a declination circle using only two microscope pairs. The solution is based upon a generalization of the elementary symmetric method (Lévy, 1955), which preserves absolute symmetry with respect to the divisions but avoids the connection stage. Specifically this method uses the least squares solution, the statistical properties of which are discussed, and particularly the power spectrum and correlation are considered. Conditions for the choice of microscope angles are given, and together with numerical examples the actual selection of angles is shown, not forgetting the stochastic properties of the solution. Filtering of spectral peaks of random character is considered. Numerical comparison with the general symmetric method (Høg, 1961) shows similar efficiency in the case of 5' divisions, in spite of the smaller number of microscopes; the number of measurements is multiplied by 1.5 and the overall accuracy is improved by the same factor with respect to Høg's method.
