The Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRSpec) places the most stringent demands upon its detectors of all James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) instruments. We present the scientific rationale for challenging requirements including noise ≤6 electrons rms per exposure. In concert, we discuss laboratory test results that are informing the design of NIRSpec's detector system and operational concept.
