An experiment was conducted with the Mars 4 spacecraft to observe the plasma over the Martian surface while it was not illuminated by the sun and to determine the altitude profile of electron concentration in the nocturnal ionosphere. The spacecraft transmitted two coherent, monochromatic signals in the decimeter and centimeter ranges; these signals were received and analyzed on earth. The method is more accurate than the single-frequency, incoherent mode used by Mariner 9. A reliable electron-concentration distribution was obtained and basic characteristics, the altitude of the fundamental ionization maximum and the electron concentration at maximum, were established.
