The first detection of the J = 1 - 0 transition of CH3CN at 18.4 GHz in the dark cloud TMC-1 and the complex molecular cloud Sgr B2 is reported. This is the first time that CH3CN has been seen in a cold dust cloud and that the hyperfine structure of a transition of this molecule has been resolved in space. A column density N(CH3CN) of 7 x 10 to the 12th/sq cm is found in TMC-1, comparable to that of many other molecules there. In Sgr B2 the emission shows self-absorption in two of the hyperfine components.
