Absorption in the (J, K) equals (8, 8) and (9, 9) metastable lines of ammonia is reported for the 63 km/s cloud toward Sgr B2. The lines are in pure absorption, consistent with a low-density (an nH2 of approximately 10,000/cu cm), high-temperature (approximately 200 K) region. A possible heating mechanism for the gas might be turbulence, driven by the shearing motion of the cloud. It is concluded that the cloud seen in absorption, as well as other galactic center clouds, may be dissipating the supersonic motions which are known to be present in this region. The ultimate energy source may then be the galactic rotation field.
