An example of high amplitude electric field oscillations detected by PROGNOZ-8 near the magnetopause at very low frequencies ranging down to fractions of Hz is considered. Observations by other spacecraft including ISEE and AMPTE are discussed. High amplitude fluctuations described are connected with the convection of plasmas in transverse electromagnetic fields. An alternative explanation discussed is a solitary nonlinear structure. The detection of charged dust grains is examined. The additional aim of looking for low frequency phenomena, such as Alfven waves is considered. The precise nature of discontinuities or shocks (tangential or rotational), nonlinear waves and vortices could not be inferred.
