The emission from rich clusters that are powerful X-ray sources has been interpreted either as thermal bremsstrahlung of the very hot gas that fills the clusters, or as inverse Compton scattering of photons by relativistic electrons. Using a 25-m telescope, observations at 10.6 GHz were made of small diminutions in the cosmic microwave background radiation in the directions of seven rich clusters of galaxies. The observations strongly suggest the presence of hot plasma in the clusters of galaxies. This means that X-radiation from the clusters is just thermal bremsstrahlung of the gas, and that previous inverse Compton interpretations may be ruled out.
