An extensive series of high-resolution spectra of the He I 6678 A line of Zeta Oph is presented. These data show distortions at the 1 percent level which propagate uniformly across the absorption line profile with a crossing time of approximately 5 hours. Two models are developed which provide excellent fits to these line profile distortions: occultation by density enhanced spokes in a circumstellar disk, or high-order nonradial oscillation of the star. The former model is contradicted by the absence of observable photometric variations, and is thus rejected. It is concluded that the line profile distortions are caused by high-order nonradial oscillations. An l = 8, m = -8 mode provides good fits to many of the line profiles. This mode seems to always be present, although its amplitude is variable, and occasional waves are missing altogether. The observed amplitude of the oscillation from season to season apparently correlates with episodes of outburst on Zeta Oph. Sporadic release of pulsation energy during mode switching provides a plausible explanation for these outbursts, and for the occurrence of the Be phenomenon in general.
