The J = 9--8 transition of HCCNC has been detected toward IRC+10216. The intensity of the line indicates that the column density of HCCNC toward IRC+10216 is N = 8.4 x 1012 cm-2. The ratio of column densities N(HC3N)/N(HCCNC) in IRC+10216 is ~130. This is a factor 2--7 larger than the ratio from TMC-1. The mere presence of HCCNC in IRC+10216 suggests that ion-molecule reactions are at least partly responsible for the production of HC3N in the circumstellar envelope. On the other hand, the high N(HC3N)/N(HCCNC) ratio from IRC+10216, as compared to TMC-1, suggests that other chemical processes, such as fast neutral-neutral reactions, may also make a significant contribution to the production of HC3N in IRC+10216.
