Scientific paper

We have made mapping observations of far-infrared spectroscopy of the Carina nebula, a very active region on the Galactic plane, with a spatial separation of 3 arcmin. The observations were made for the central 20 arcmin x 40 arcmin region of the Carina nebula with LWS01 (45 - 170 μm full grating scan mode). Several emission lines, such as [OI] 63, 145 μm, [OIII] 52, 88 μm, [NIII] 57 μm, [NII] 122 μm and [CII] 158 μm, have been detected at most observed positions. The electron density was derived from the [OIII] lines, and two distinct components can be seen in the electron density map. One is a component with a density of 100 - 150 cm-3, which encloses two HII regions, Car I and Car II. The other is an extended diffuse component with a density of 30 - 60 cm-3. The extension of the ionized gas in the line of sight direction has been estimated from the line intensity. It is about 10 pc for the central ionized region, suggesting the presence of spherical ionized gas centered at l~ 287o .55 and b~ -0o .63, while the extension is derived to be 1 - 2 kpc for the extended gas. The latter indicates that the diffuse ionized gas exists extensively around the Carina arm. The present LWS observations of the ionic lines indicate the presence of very low electron density gas (ne < 100 cm-3) extended over the Galactic plane in a scale of kpc unambiguously for the first time.
