We report imaging observations of the symbotic long--period variable R Aquarii (R Aqr) at near--infrared and radio wavelengths. We discuss how these measurements were obtained, and how they might be interpreted in terms of structures on or near the target stars.
Reconstructed near-infrared and radio images of the Mira star R Aqr are also presented here. The near-infrared images show evidence of a clumpy water shell around the central star. The VLBA observations of SiO masers in the outer molecular envelope show evidence of turbulence, with jet-like features containing velocity gradients. Taken together, our near-infrared and radio data suggest that the water shell and SiO maser features are both extremely clumpy, but the physical connection between these two concentric regions remains elusive.
