X-ray observations of the type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 5506 over a 4-yr
period are reported. Although the light curve shows no indication of
long-term variability, a significant flare in the X-ray emission lasting
about 3 days is observed. There is now evidence for X-ray variability on
a time scale of a few days or less for most classes of active galaxy.
