Scientific paper
The theory of black holes and their possible appearances are briefly introduced. The principles, methods, as well as the current status of black holes' detection and confirmation both in galactic centers and in X-ray binaries are reviewed. On the galactic scale at least 11 black hole candidates have been detected in nearby galactic centers. On the stellar scale, one has detected at least 10 strong black hole candidates in high mass X-ray binaries and soft X-ray transients. No conclusive criterion is available so far to distinguish black hole binaries from the neutron star binaries. All these indicate that no adequate evidence has been found to confirm the existence of the black holes in nature.
