Mars: Water, Ice
Scientific paper
In the field of Astrobiology, water is generally seen as one of the most important ingredients that allow the development of life. This is also valid for Mars, where recent research suggests the presence of considerable amounts of water in the Martian subsurface. The expected electrical characteristics of Martian material/ice mixtures are recapitulated. We introduce the design features of Mutual Impedance (MI) probes. Assumptions and methods used for model calculations are explained, and simulation results are presented. MI probe architectures for surface mapping and subsurface characterization are suggested, and strategies for identifying promising sampling locations are dicussed.
