The Ultraviolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) of the Swift Observatory is now detecting about 70% of all long GRBs at high galactic latitude that are observed within 10 minutes of the burst trigger. Almost all these detections are made using the initial 100-second exposure with the White (160-650 nm) filter that typically starts about 100 seconds after the trigger. Additional exposures with the White and 6 other filters produce a well-sampled light curve and low-resolution spectral information for the early afterglow. These bursts provide a well-defined sample for comparing the optical properties of afterglows with other burst characteristics. We also discuss the nature of the undetected or "dark" bursts including the likelihood that these bursts have high redshifts.
