It is becoming clear that spectroscopy will play an ever more central role in our understanding of exoplanetary systems. As direct imaging becomes more powerful, so must the direct spectroscopy that will follow. Here we discuss the New Worlds Observer, a mission concept for the coming decade that utilizes an external occulter (or starshade) to block out the obscuring light from the central star and leave the signal from planets free from interference and subject to spectroscopy. It is through this means that we hope to measure molecules (and biomarkers) in all kinds of exoplanets, including Earth-like.
