The present paper deals with the sputtering process as a mechanism for the destruction of interstellar grains. A Monte Carlo simulation based on a single scattering model has been applied to this process under the assumptions of random collisions and no inelastic collisions. The simulation has been performed for high-energy (5 keV-5 MeV) proton-bombardments on spherical graphite grains and dirty ice grains. The numerical results have shown that, in contrast to the case of semiinfinite targets, sideward sputtering is a main contributor in the case of spherical grains. A new formula for a spherical target is proposed, in which the boundary effect is taken into account. The results can be applied to the erosion of grains injected into interstellar clouds or to the destruction of interstellar grains by low-energy cosmic-rays.
