Rosat denotes Roentgensatelit, an X-ray satellite that will be launched by the Space Shuttle in 1987. The scientific payload comprises a large X-ray telescope with a focal length of 2400 mm and a diameter of 835 mm and a XUV wide-field camera with a focal length of 530 mm and a diameter of 580 mm; the energy range covered is from 0.04 keV to 2 keV (300 A to 6 A). Particular attention is given to the structural and thermal design of the X-ray telescope. The performance of the subsystems of the telescope is discussed; the telescope resolution is deduced on the basis of an error analysis. Resolution figures of better than 30 arcsec (68 percent power radius) during the all sky survey scan mode and better than 10 arcsec during the pointing mode are presented.
