We report on tradeoffs derived from "science drivers" that will help determine the design of a deep, wide-field-of-view multi-bandpass imaging photometric survey conducted in the time-delay and integrate mode of detector operation. The key optical and near-infrared scientific programs we consider are: photometric and astrometric investigation of the solar neighborhood, synoptic AGN reverberation analysis, and discovery of targets of opportunity, including distant supernovae. Analysis of the requirements imposed by these programs help define the formats and physical arrangement of detectors in the focal plane mosaic, the pixel resolution, the number and definition of bandpass filters, and the mode of operation in the time domain.
The survey will be conducted at McDonald Observatory, where the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) provides the capability for queued-operation spectra of synoptically monitored objects and near real-time spectra for targets of opportunity.
