The Hipparcos satellite Schmidt telescopes' 'beam combiner' is actually a beam splitter whose mirror is split in two halves that are assembled at an angle of 29 deg. This quasi-flat mirror, located at the center of curvature of the primary spherical mirror, is aspherized to compensate for the primary mirror's spherical aberration. Attention is presently given to the beam combiner's other design features and fabrication methods, as well as the procedures used to determine its optical parameters.
