A brushless dc motor for momentum/reaction wheel applications was developed. Ironless armature is adopted and trapezoidal torque function is achieved, making effective use of a high coercive rare earth cobalt permanent magnet for the field system. The magnet rotor position sensing for electronic commutation is accomplished with high resolution optical reflective sensors. The performance tests for characterization of the motor parameters are presented.
