The De-spun Rocket Borne Imager 2 (DERBI2) is a low light imager which is designed to obtain images from a sounding rocket with minimal blurring due to the spinning of the payload. A pair of DERBI2 imagers will be flown on the sounding rocket of the Rocket Observations of Pulsating Aurora (ROPA) mission, which is scheduled for a January 2007 launch. The aft-viewing DERBI2-ROPA, with its 116° angle of view, will obtain images of the pulsating aurora from above. These images will be "de-spun" within the imager via a rotating platform, based on existing gyroscope designs currently in use on sounding rockets, upon which will be mounted an Electron Multiplying CCD (EMCCD) and supporting electronics. The use of an EMCCD eliminates the need for additional rotating optical components such as an intensifier allowing for a more compact imager than its predecessor. The DERBI2-ROPA instruments have been calibrated at the MIRL Facility for Optical Calibration At Low Light Levels (FOCAL3) of the University of New Hampshire. The design of the DERBI2-ROPA imagers and the calibration results will be presented here.
