Depth-profiles of F, Cl, Br, and I were determined in four different Antarctic H5 chondrites and two non-Antarctic chondrites. Neutron activation analysis and ion-selective potentiometry were used to study layers removed from the meteorites. Results indicated that Antarctic meteorites have higher concentrations of halogens at the surface than in the interior, with the highest enrichment factors for I and Cl. Measured surface enrichments are not correlated with the degree of weathering. Non-Antarctic meteorites showed similar halogen concentrations. A model based on these results is presented for estimation of the degree of contamination and relation to the duration of exposure at the surface of the Antarctic ice.
