Depth fluctuations of the maximum of cosmic rays showers as determined at the Iakutsk facility are equal to sigma(Xm) = 61 + or - 10 g/sq cm. Specifically, measurements were made of fluctuations of the ratio of the number of muons (at energies greater than 1 GeV) to the number of electrons at a distance 300 m from the shower axis. The form of the Xm distribution is in accordance with the hypothesis of an 80-percent proton composition of primary cosmic rays in the above energy range.
