Formulae are given for the deprojection of emissivities in spherically symmetric, transparent systems. The methods can be applied to optically thin bremsstrahlung and synchrotron sources. The case of anisotropic emission is studied both using extensions of Von Zeipel's ring count method and Plummers parallel strip count method. As a specific example, the deprojection formulae for anisotropic, polarized thermal bremsstrahlung emission are derived. These formulae are in particular useful to derive the anisotropic electron velocity distribution, if present, in supernova remnants. They also apply to the solar corona. Further an example of deprojecting the emissivity in the case of cylindrical symmetry is given. Application of the method to Tycho's supernova remnant leads to an estimate of the local large scale interstellar density gradient scale length of 4 pc.
