The correlation between the ultraviolet excess and the lithium content in M II giants is investigated. Data on the lithium content of these stars, having a Li/Ca ratio of less than -1.7, are taken from Boyarchuk (1976); the color indices V-B, taken from the catalog by Blanco et al. (1968), are also listed. Calculations show that there is a weak correlation between the ultraviolet excess and the lithium content, and that the excess (U-B) decreases in absolute value with increasing lithium content. A dependence due to mixing is thus proposed, whereby the lithium content is decreased in the outer layers of the star through its burning in the inner, high-temperature regions. It is assumed that lithium is produced on the surface of the stars by the decay of superdense prestellar matter. Lithium accumulates in the star's atmosphere, while the excess ultraviolet radiation is observed only in the early stages of activity; large excesses of ultraviolet radiation are therefore found in stars which have not had time to accumulate lithium.
