Variations of hmE, the height of the E-layer maximum, with solar activity were investigated on the basis of rocket sounding data. Data from the Kharkov incoherent scattering station indicate that periods of low and high solar activity are characterized by a small monotonic decrease in hmE, while a more abrupt decrease in hmE occurs in the case of intermediate activity, F = 140-180.
