The spiral structure observed in many disk-shaped galaxies has been successfully explained in terms of the density-wave theory. The main issue remaining is the search for a mechanism or mechanisms for the origin and long-term maintenance of such density-wave patterns. Starting from the gasdynamic equation for disk-shaped galaxies, the amplitude distribution of the density waves over the whole gas disk is obtained through a uniformly valid second-order asymptotic approximation. A mechanism for the long-term maintenance of these density waves is also suggested.
