The plasma density in the cusp region and within auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) sources was measured using two Viking instruments, the resonance sounder and the mutual impedance probe. The plasma density in the cusp proper is found to be much larger (greater than 100/cu cm in some cases) than in the adjacent regions. The densities and temperatures of the various components of the plasma are estimated. Active experiments are used to test the method of the upper cutoff frequency to estimate the plasma frequency. The method is shown to be valid most of the time in the high-altitude auroral region, yet sometimes misleading in other regions. The auroral regions are found to be low-density regions, the density within AKR sources is of the order of less than 1/cu cm.
