The paper shows that the statistical properties of an ensemble of H II-regions, the parameters of which are the amplitude and the scale length of the density fluctuations, can be calculated directly if the basic equation of the Stromgren theory is complemented by the assumption that the density pattern can be represented by a Markovian process in r, the distance from the central star. It is shown that the joint probability distributions for the local density and the degree of ionization are the main results of such calculations. It is concluded that the results indicate that inhomogeneous H II-regions are bounded by a rather broad transition region in which both neutral and ionized matter can coexist.
